For many professional photographers style seems to come naturally. I was not one of those photographer's(LOL), it wasn't until recently I even understood the meaning of "Style" completely.
Style can not be forced. It's trial, and error, and taking that first(and hardest) step out of your comfort zones, while finding "your way" in shooting and post processing, allowing "the audience"(your followers....and in some cases stalkers LOL) to distinguish a piece of work, with one simple glance, as YOURS. (the artist)
Your personal style will set you apart from the others. It will become your name.
You shouldn't "rush" your style,(we all know I didn't :) ) it should come to you naturally. A revelation of continuance and constants in your imaging. Time, practice and most importantly patience is the key to finding it. You will know it when you see it! And when you find it, stick with it, enhance it, tweak it, and be proud of it! It is what you've worked for, after all. Don't let anyone tell you it's wrong, because it's YOURS! Show it off!
But, KNOW it, because if you can't define it...who can?
I just recently realized my style. This being said, I also just recently became aware of the full meaning of "Style" and the impact it has made is stunning to me! It came to me as I was reviewing my images from the past few years,(which I do regularly, to assure myself that I'm always learning, improving, and growing as a photographer and a business woman) noticing that I always make bright, and colorful images, and I try to reflect on an emotion of the subject in each image!
Even more recently I began working with color bursts in actions and textures, taking my work another step farther, and I have fallen in love with the way my images have evolved! I feel fulfilled now, when I look at my images. I know they are unique, bright, colorful and bursting with emotion!
Even more than that(believe it or not) I was able to create a workflow guideline, that has cut my editing time in half!
No, I'm not saying to edit every image the exact same way, because every single image needs it's own special attention. I'm saying I have been able to develop a basic post-processing schedule to follow, to enhance my "Brand".(Feeling another blog coming on LOL)
My workflow guideline is helping me to stay in some guidelines, that I have set forth for myself, and enhance ach and every one of my images to a level where I am proud to show it, and to tell people..."Yeah, I created that." =)
I do suggest to everyone who asks, and is serious about photography to realize their own unique style, create some workflow guidelines and stick to them, and then watch your growth in editing, from "Blah" to "WOW", and your turn around time!! I'm only sorry now, that it took me this long to realize the importance of Style, and put it into action!
My next blog is coming soon! I'm working on some helpful tips, workflow hints, and some free Photoshop action links!!!
The next one will be about dealing with the competition! Friends or Foes???
Have a wonderful day, everyone, and thanks for reading!! Please leave comments and questions if you have any!
